Before you jet off, grab foreign currency from your local bank. It’s usually cheaper than airport exchange rates. My personal rule? I like to start off with at least $100 USD equivalent in the local currency — just enough for snacks, transport, and your first souvenir.

If you’re ballin’ on a budget (like me), book a hotel near public transportation. Trust me, if you’re used to cities with metro systems like NYC's MTA, you’ll be a pro abroad. Metro maps might look different, but they’re generally color coded and easy to follow even when in different languages.

My tip: carry a duffle bag as your personal item. Why? So you can check your original luggage and use the duffle to bring back all the goodies you find abroad. Pro tip: never check anything of real value — you don’t want to risk losing it.

Make a copy of your passport and email it to a trusted loved one before you leave. Keep a printed version on you just in case. If things go left, you’ll be glad you did.
